Sliding Doors (1998)

this is another one of my insanely quickly growing number of love stories that i watch over and over. i need to get this one on dvd...i'll just add that to my amazon wishlist... ok, done. i've seen it quite a few times, but not at all recently. but it kept popping up in my head, so i had to watch it again last night. wonderful film.

it's tells a story in two different ways simultaneously. the events of the main character's life all pivot around whether or not she got on a train one day. in one instance she does and the story progresses from there as she meets a man and then catches her boyfriend in bed with another woman. in the other instance she doesn't meet the man and instead stays with her boyfriend as he constantly runs around on her behind her back.

both stories in this film are very interesting and there really aren't that many good films that show infidelity as it is taking place. the movie also helps you to empathize, to a certain extent, with the cheating boyfriend. it might be rather hard to believe that that would be a likable character, but he actually is. they do a good job with that. keep in mind that i am in no way condoning infidelity, but i just think the story is told well.

anyway, i've told Jill that she should see this one. it's not perfect, but it's definitely a very solid film and i'd recommend it to any of my friends. plus Gwyneth Paltrow is almost always a positive addition to films. she's very good in this one. and i love John Hannah. that man is awesome. i will have his babies. wait, no i won't.
