Somewhere in Time (1980)

although i've seen it dozens of times since i was born, i don't think i've ever actually written anything on it. this was one of my mom's favorite films as i was growing up, so Melanie and i saw it a bunch of times. it's one of those that just got deeply inserted into my personality. i've since developed a sincere enjoyment for the novels of Richard Matheson who wrote the story for Somewhere in Time.

the movie is sort of a fantasy romance where Christopher Reeve goes back in time in order to meet the woman of his dreams, a famous actress of the early 20th century played by Jane Seymour. in order to do it he has to sort of hypnotize himself into believing that it actually is the year in question and then once he's there he has to try to convince her that he is not someone to be afraid of and that they are meant to be together no matter who or what may try to stop them.

this is an excellent role for both of the leads in this film. really i think this is probably the best work that either of them ever did, at least to my knowledge. it's too bad Christopher Reeve was taken out of the spotlight so suddenly a few years ago, but i guess there are always unfortunate things that happen to good people like that. i'm not sure what the heck Jane Seymour is up to now that her Dr. Quinn days are over.

i'll always remember the first time i watched this with my close friends in high school. we were all sitting there quietly and then the scary "penny shot" happened. (you'll have to see the film to know what i'm talking about there.) Keith just flipped out for a minute or so and started yelling something. it was great. it's such a critical moment of the film, it was funny to see that he was getting so into it.

man, i need to stop reading books so much and start watching more movies. wait...maybe not. i'm so torn.
