The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

so i was always interested in going to see this movie. almost any time there is something going on that is apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic i'm interested in it to at least some degree. i guess it's the hidden survivalist in me. also, i really like the title of this movie. i know that some of my friends have said that they hated it or thought it was stupid, but i really love the title. David and Erin wanted to go see this, as did my mom, so we all took a trip out to the mall on Saturday to see the late show. we had a good time, but i don't think any of us were expecting to be blown away by the movie and i don't think we were. it was just entertaining and that's about it.

the story here is that because of global warming, the earth's climate starts to go awry; and very quickly so. superstorms begin to break out and begin tearing the earth's cities apart. the focus of course is on the United States. for the most part we follow a particular scientist who has predicted the coming of the disaster only days before, and his son who is on a school fieldtrip in downtown Manhattan. after the storms begin and millions of people begin to be killed, the father makes a promise that he will come to rescue his son. he decides that even though it's hopeless, he will make the trek from a safe haven in Mexico back up to Manhattan in order to find his son and attempt to save him.

most of this movie is pretty goofy i guess. the dialogue is a little stupid and many of the characters are very superficial. the acting abilities of Jake Gyllenhaal and Dennis Quaid help the film, but just not enough. it's still pretty silly.

my favorite bit is when a Russian ship floats into the middle of Manhattan and gets frozen there. the kids attempt to board it in order to find supplies, but quickly get attacked by wolves. yeah, try to write a script where those events take place and make it not be somewhat stupid. i dare you.

so it's an ok movie. i recommend it with reservations. it's entertaining and i don't think it will upset you because it's so incredibly idiotic or anything. i think you'll enjoy watching it, but don't expect a life-changing experience.
