The Young Poisoner's Handbook (1995)

here's another good one that Leslie recommeded to me. it's got sort of a Harold and Maude (1971) feel to it with all of the obsession with death and killing. plus there's the young male brunette protagonist. well, i saw some similarities anyway.

this is a true story about Graham Young, an English boy who became obsessed with chemistry and later with poisoning people. at one point in the film he is hospitalized after murdering his mother and he strives to convince the doctors that he is sane again. once he gets back out into the real world he has to fight against the forces that seem to be forcing him back into his old habits.

overall a very good film. i was thoroughly entertained, but i felt like for a long time i was being teased. i mean, you expect him to constantly be poisoning people right? well a lot of the time he's going through therapy or trying not to poison someone. and i mean the whole time you're waiting for it. "do it. do it. you know you're going to kill someone, so just get to it."

so yeah, i was bothered by that at certain points, but other than that it was great. i thought the lead actor, Hugh O'Conor was particularly good. i looked up some info on him and he was also the kid in My Left Foot (1989) which i thought was an amazing performance. and his upcoming film is spelled Bl,.m (2004). no, that's not a typo.
