Constantine (2005)

we didn't really mean to end up watching Equilibrium and Constantine so closely together...with both being inspired/influenced by The Matrix (1999). i guess that's what happens though when you stop paying attention to your queue and let the system just pick whatever's next.

the movie is about a man who deals with sending demons back to the underworld. he himself is dying of lung cancer, so it's sort of ironic that he works with the dead. he meets a girl who has some psychic powers and who is trying to figure out what happened to her sister who supposedly committed suicide. and there's also some crap about the son of the Devil coming to life and destroying the world.

Constantine is of course based on some comic book that most people never read. and it's got a lot of religious fantasy malarky in it. it's really just a silly movie. it was entertaining to a certain degree, but mostly it was just a show off of a movie that didn't really do anything for us. i think that's the impression i had when it first came out at the theater, but for some reason or another, i wanted to see it for myself.

i think part of me just wanted to see Rachel Weisz in another movie. i had a real crush on her when The Mummy (1999) first came out, and i think that's still sort of lingering. ooh, it looks like she's in an upcoming Darren Aronofsky movie called The Fountain. Aronofsky has done some pretty awesome movies in the past such as Requiem for a Dream (2000) and Pi (1998).

i also sort of enjoyed seeing Gavin Rossdale (previously the lead singer of Bush) in this movie as Balthazar. even though his character was exceedingly creepy and sleazy, i think he did a decent job.
