The Awful Truth (1937)

i was browsing around at the downtown library today trying to find old movies that looked good. i saw the AFI Passions list (or maybe it was just a similar list) posted on the wall. i looked at all the film photographs on it and this one stood out for me as being one that i hadn't seen or even heard about. the cover is hilarious to me considering the title.

it's about a married couple who don't get along too well one day and decide they need to get a divorce. the problem is that they're still in love with each other. they spend two whole months cracking each other up and destroying each other's idiotic attempts to find love in other people. it's definitely a screwball comedy.

it's another Leo McCarey film. he did lots of other good hilarious films such as Love Affair (1939) and Duck Soup (1933). i might have to try to see some more of his films. it looks like he's got a variety of different types of films he experimented with.

well i enjoyed The Awful Truth, and it reminded me a lot of Bringing Up Baby (1938), but it wasn't quite over the top enough for me. (hmmm...i never thought i'd hear myself say that...) plus i wasn't amazed by Irene Dunne either. and i totally thought that this was the very first time that i had seen her in a movie, but she was actually also the lead actress in Love Affair (1939) with Carey Grant, and the female lead in Cimarron (1931). don't ever watch that movie.
