Underworld (2003)

this is one that i needed someone else to suggest that we go see. i probably would've waited to rent this one if Keith hadn't asked my mom and I to go with him to see it on Saturday. my mom tends to like sci-fi fantasy type stuff too, so i told him she would probably enjoy it as much as we would.

it's sort of a Romeo & Juliet story, except Juliet comes from a group of vampires and Romeo is destined to be a werewolf. the two groups have been at war with each other for centuries. Kate Beckinsale stars as Selene, a powerful vampire who is somewhat of a vigilate warrior amongst the vampires. she is part of a hunting team that goes out and attempts to slaughter the werewolves, but one night she sees them tracking a human. she makes it her job to take the human for herself and keep the werewolves from getting him. but why do they want him anyway?

really, this movie has some great aspects to it. the special effects were almost all quite good. the only questionable thing i can really think of is the "super being" that gets created at the end. come on...black body paint and long fingernails do not make you scary. they make you Nightcrawler from the X-Men. the plot is quite good though, and the actors are about 50% good. some of them are pretty questionable.

i'm really starting to like the powerful female fighter protagonist. and i think the rest of the viewing world is too. (we got to see the Resident Evil 2 (2004) trailer before this started and i'm damn psyched to see that.) my only regret is that Selene never really showed that much power in this film. true, she has her moments, but she really needs to be better than everyone else for this to be a winning story. she needs to have hidden powers that other people can't even understand. oh well, it's a pretty good movie still.
