History of the World: Part I (1981)

so lots of changes to the site today. apparently there was a little too much Natalie involved in yesterday's creation, so i had to do some alterations. i added a couple of features and made everything a bit more organized as well. i hope this will be working out a little bit better. i'm still trying to decide if when you click on the pictures they should go to entries that i've done or the imdb info. if anyone has any comments on this, feel free to use the new email link, the notes link, or even the suggestion form. whatever you want. it will be much appreciated. on to the movie...

there was some confusion between this film and Life of Brian (1979) when Colin and i were having a conversation a week or so ago, so i decided to see this one so that i would actually know what i was talking about from now on. Life of Brian remains to be seen.

this is a Mel Brooks comedy which goes through about 5 or 6 key periods of history. some for just a minute or two, some for a half hour or so. things like the dawn of man, the French Revolution, the reign of Roman power, the Last Supper, etc. what else can i say to explain it? Mel Brooks himself plays the main character in each time period and he makes fun of nearly everything with this movie, especially sex and man's constant obsession with it.

there are a few hilarious bits in this, but Mel Brooks doesn't make me laugh that much for this entire film to be considered a comedy. one of the highlights for me was when he's acting as Louis XIV of France and he's playing a human chess match. he invokes the king's right to take three moves at once. "Knight jumps Queen. Bishop jumps Queen. Pawns jump Queen. GANGBANG!!!!" (he and his court midgets run out and jump on the pile of men humping the fallen Queen.)

so yeah, parts of this are great, but mostly no.
