Key Largo (1948)

i decided to go with another Lauren Bacall film for today. unfortunately she wasn't extraordinarily prominent in this film even though she headlined along with Bogart and Edward G. Robinson. this is sort of a thriller/drama film.

if anyone remembers the Rocco gangster character Bugs Bunny used to sometimes do with the big lower lip sticking out, that's from this movie. that's Edward G. Robinson. with all the "myeah...see?" he says that crap constantly in this film. it was sort of odd to actually see where that impression was coming from.

the plot is that a retired war vet comes to visit the family of one of his soldiers who died during the war. at the same time, a group of famous gangsters is hiding out in the hotel that the family owns and is bossing everyone around. eventually the soldier, along with everyone else ends up with a gun in their face and they have to decide if being brave is actually worth risking your life for. this movie is basically about questioning what bravery is.

this film probably would've flown better with me if Lauren Bacall had been more prominent. the romance aspect was also more or less nonexistent. although the addition of Lionel Barrymore to the cast was an added bonus. an ok film, but i doubt i'll watch it again. be sure to hit the previous movie button tonight.
