Some Kind of Wonderful (1987)

not only did my favorite band, MxPx, provide the name for my diary through their lyrics, they also informed me of the existence of this awesome film which i had not seen before last year. this film also holds the unprecedented honor of being the only film i can think of that i actually watched twice the first time i checked it out. after someone recommended it to me a week or two ago, i decided that it was time for me to watch it again.

this is basically a classic John Hughes film of the 80s, although Howard Deutch actually directed it. it was written and produced by John Hughes. it tells of two high school aged kids who are trying to find love and some direction for their lives. there's the art student/mechanic Keith who doesn't seem to fit in very well and his tomboy best friend Watts who only cares about her drums and being with Keith. when Keith starts to get interested in one of the preppy girls at school, the notorious Amanda Jones, things get really interesting. and it starts to look like Watts is jealous, to put it mildly.

this movie is just the epitome of cute for me. it would be easy to dismiss this film as somewhat misguided or stereotypical of high school life, but if you can actually find out how to enjoy it because of that fact, you'll love it. the cast is amazing. i think if i had to pick my favorite aspect of the movie, it would be the cast. everyone is perfect for every role. Hardy Jenns is the villain you love to hate, Watts is the tough yet sweet girl who you want everything to go right for, and then any movie that has Elias Koteas in it has got to be doing something right. the writing is beautiful as well.

i love the opening montage for this movie. i still think it's amazingly cool even though it has that 80s flavor. maybe it's actually cool because of that fact. the beginning of this film knows that it's cool and it's right.

anyway i need to stop talking about this film and buy it on dvd. i wonder if it's out yet...
