Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004)

well, since Jill and i so much enjoy the first Bridget Jones film, we decided to go see this one on Friday. i hadn't heard too much about it yet, although Jill had read the book and was interested to see the part where Bridget interviews the famous actor Colin Firth, who incidentally plays Mark Darcy in the film. we had little idea of how they might pull this off. apparently those in charge of producing the film felt the same, and that portion of the book has been completely excluded from this film. sad really. it could have been genius. but it wasn't. they copped out.

after Bridget and Mark got together at the end of the last film, they are now happily spending a lot of time together as a couple. Bridget starts to worry again about Mark's uptight-ness and she is especially worried about one of his enchanting female co-workers who seems very interested in Mark, and she always seems to do everything right. since Bridget seems to do everything wrong, and is exceedingly jealous, they end up splitting up. Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) also makes a reappearance into Jones' life and they end up together in Thailand i think. unfortunately Bridget ends up in prison there, without a hope in the world. it's a good thing she has a friend who is a powerful lawyer.

the only new thing that i really enjoyed about this movie was the splendid and very sweet performance of Jacinda Barrett who i knew looked familiar but could not place. it turns out she was actually a Real World castmember from the London cast in 1995. i seem to remember all of the guys being interested in her...and did she cry a lot? i guess they all do on the Real World. the IMDb says "She is mostly remembered on the show for buying a dog, Legend, and then refusing to properly house-train it, which understandably frustrated the other cast members."

other than that, i felt that this was pretty much the same as the original Bridget Jones' Diary (2000). obviously that's a pretty damn good thing, but it's just not as fresh and doesn't add much to the original picture. i was happy with this one, but not splendidly so.
