Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)

finally the last Best Picture nominee for this past year made it to the dollar movie theater, so Greg and Steve and i went out there to catch it. apparently it's also already been released on dvd (or at least will be very soon). so either way it didn't cost too much to see it at this point.

this is Peter Weir's latest film which involves a British warship in 1805 off the coast of South America. they spend the whole movie chasing a privateering French vessel of masterful design (made by the yankees no less) and trying to destroy her so that she will do no more damage to the British Empire's assets on the high seas.

really everything about this movie is well done and entertaining. the script is quite excellent, filled with lots of intense battle speaches, intelligent conversations between friends, and excellent jokes that will have you rolling. the only bad thing is that you can't avoid seeing the pattern with all of these military movies how they all have a few people get dangerously injured in the plot, some of them die in a battle (once you get to know them), and they keep having to come up with these ingenious schemes in order to stay on top of the enemy. obviously not all successful war movies do this, but a lot do. i guess it's what we like to see, and it definitely works and is entertaining. i'm just saying it's a patented move.

anyway, very good movie overall. i wasn't interested in seeing it originally, but it was definitely worth my $2.
