The Pride of the Yankees (1942)

when looking for a photo of Teresa Wright a few entries back, i came across one with her and Gary Cooper. it was from this film, one that my friend David had told me was quite good previously and i had forgotten about. that made me want to see it. it was nominated for 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor and Actress for Gary Cooper and Teresa Wright.

this is a biographical drama about the life of American baseball legend Lou Gehrig. he was a very sweet mild-mannered guy who always seemed to do the right thing. it also goes very deep into his romance of and marriage to Eleanor Twitchell Gehrig. the film treats him as a sort of peace-time hero who lived an honest and amazing life. his life story is lots of fun to hear about, and it's even better watching it on the screen.

the chemistry between Teresa Wright and Gary Cooper is awesome, but then she's one of those leading ladies who can make any romance seem plausible. and Gary Cooper's range is not great, but that doesn't mean that he can't play this type of character flawlessly.

there was also a lot of awesome cinematography and editing work done on this film, but the main part of what makes this great is the story and the acting. awesome film.

on a side note concerning the diary itself, after much work over the past couple of days i actually created a search feature that seems to be working fairly well. just click on the new "search entries" link in order to test it out. why is this useful? well, what if you remember me talking about something that was sort of off topic, like all of the times i've talked about Natalie Portman or something? what could you do? well now you can search for whatever you're interested in. again, let me know if you have any trouble with it.

looks like i've got another "theme week" starting tomorrow. this time it's going to be centered around Daniel Day-Lewis. i figured since there's been so much hype around his performance in Gangs of New York (2002) recently, and i've had a couple of film recommendations with him in them lately that it was a fitting time for it. so keep an eye out for that.
