To Catch a Thief (1955)

since i didn't have anything checked out from the library today i decided to watch something that i had seen previously. the diary usually keeps me from doing that. i always feel like i have to be watching something new. bad habit. but this movie is awesome for me to have a copy of. thanks for taping it for me mom.

this film is directed by Alfred Hitchcock and stars Cary Grant. and who else? one of my favorite actresses and probably one of the sexiest women of all time, the amazing Grace Kelly. she just wasn't in enough films. too bad she had to go and get married and become princess of Monaco at the height of her career. damn these people trying to have personal lives. right, but this was one of the last films that she starred in because it was shot in and around the French Riviera and Monaco. it was actually during the filming of this movie that Grace Kelly met her future husband, Prince Rainier III.

i couldn't resist watching this film after having talked about her being onscreen with Cary Grant when i did the review of An Affair to Remember (1957) late last night. the film is an interesting mix of genres. comedy, romance, and thriller. leave it up to Hitchcock to pull it off. basically Cary Grant is a famous retired jewel thief who lives near the French Riviera. suddenly a new cat burglar starts stealing tons of jewelry in exactly the same style as he used to and the police start tailing him. in order to prove his innocence to a tribunal, he takes it upon himself to catch the real burglar in the act. along the way he meets an extremely rich young lady who can't resist him and is seemingly irresistable herself. they end up needing to put their heads and resources together in order to catch the real thief.

hey, i think i might be getting better at this plot summary thing.

anyway, this is definitely not the most profound of Hitchcock's works, but it is an extremely likeable film. great performances, lots of great dialogue, Oscar winning cinematography, and an outstanding cast. if you're a fan of Grace Kelly, Alfred Hitchcock, or Cary Grant (or all of the above as i am), you should really watch this one. very entertaining.

weird. i just read on the IMDb's trivia section for this film that the cliff that overlooks Monaco where the couple stops their car to have a picnic is actually the same cliff that Grace Kelly crashed on when she was killed in 1982. that's too coincidental.
