Angela's Ashes (1999)

no, this isn't a Best Picture nominee. i was just at Movie Gallery trying to find something good to use this month's free rental coupons on. this is one of my two. expect the other one tomorrow. hint: it is a Best Picture nominee. i sort of had an idea what Angela's Ashes was supposed to be about. and i was basically right.

it's an autobiographical story based on the novel by Frank McCourt. it tells about his youth and how he grew up an extremely poor child in Ireland in the 30s and 40s. his father has trouble finding work in Limerick because he is from Northern Ireland and when he does find money he gets drunk on it. tough life. try feeding your kids when the only breadwinner can't find a job, and when he does he drinks all the money. so yeah, it's a story of basically unending hardship and struggle.

good movie though. pretty good. it's well made and has a very endearing story. it reminds me a lot of my favorite book A Tree Grows In Brooklyn, but without as many of the happy times. and of course with a masculine viewpoint as opposed to that of Francie Nolan.

sorry. not much to say today about Angela's Ashes. i guess we can expect to see at least a few slow days though since i am managing to make at least one entry almost every day.
