The Toy (1982)

7 cover

I used to watch this movie a lot because it came on HBO all the time when I was a kid. Who knows why they pick the movies they do. I do enjoy this one though because it's a very cute story and stars Richard Pryor in one of his funniest roles. I just felt like watching it again, so Jill and I sat down to do just that yesterday afternoon.

The Toy is about a spoiled rich boy who is told that he can have anything he wants. When he decides to use his father's money to buy him a funny black man to be his friend, things get slightly unusual. Everyone has trouble adjusting, but eventually Pryor and the kid start learning from each other and getting along very well. Pryor teaches the boy that getting everything you want isn't everything and that you have to have some moral fiber in order to enjoy your life and live it to the fullest.

As I said, this is a fun movie and I've seen it a ton of times. It's a good movie for me to have on in the background. ...and I guess to watch like every 5-10 years if I haven't seen it in a while.

I was checking out the trivia for this film and noticed that Scott Schwartz who plays the young spoiled boy in the movie (you might also know him as Flick, the boy who gets his tongue stuck to the pole in A Christmas Story (1983)) became a porn star in later years. That's just really weird to think of.
