Crash (2004)

well, we had to see this one since it is one of the newest additions to the IMDb's top 100 list. it's number 62 today on the list. we put off watching it for a little while, but Virginia got us interested in watching it at last weekend's Christmas party.

this movie is about a bunch of different people dealing with issues that have to do with their families and race relations. i think i'll leave the plot description at that. to go into more depth would be difficult because there are about 7 different stories going on.

imagine a combination between Donnie Darko (2001)...at least the last few minutes, the way that peoples' lives and stories intertwine in Pulp Fiction (1994), and one of Chris Rock's rants about how oh so different races are and how racist everyone is...blah blah blah. that's sort of this movie. it's a pretty good movie, but it felt very derivative to me. like it was just pulling from a bunch of things i already knew. and i considered turning it off about 20-30 minutes into it because of all of the racist stuff going on. it didn't really let up ever, but it became endurable.

it was a difficult movie to get through, but it did have a few interesting things to say about race relations. mostly they weren't that helpful, but a few scenes were. also the acting was great from a couple of people. the best performances came from Matt Dillon (who has been nominated for a Golden Globe for this one), surprisingly...the rapper Ludacris, and from Terrence Howard. so i'll say i enjoyed the movie, but i had some definite qualms about it.
