Foreign Correspondent (1940)

this is an Alfred Hitchcock film that i had had on my Netflix list for a while. no particular reason. i didn't even really know what it was about. i'm sure either Amazon or Netflix was recommending it to me because of other movies that i've seen.

it turns out it's about an American reporter (Joel McCrea) who is expected to go to Europe in 1940 and see what's going on with the peace movement there. he's told to interview a prominent peace talks figure named Van Meer, but ends up witnessing his assassination instead. he chases the culprit and finds that Van Meer is actually still alive and being tortured to find out secrets of the peace negotiations. and the worst part might be that the father of the woman McCrea has fallen in love with might be in on the plot!

it was a pretty entertaining movie. as always, Hitchcock has done a wonderful job of keeping us in suspense and keeping things exciting. he also always does a great job of finding excellent leading actors and especially actresses for his films. this film starred Joel McCrea who i'm not totally crazy about. the only other thing i've seen him in is Sullivan's Travels (1941), which i wasn't crazy about either. i did really enjoy seeing the leading actress in Foreign Correspondent though, who is named Laraine Day. she did a wonderful job and went through a huge range of emotions throughout the film and of course she's very beautiful with her short brown curly hair.

i'm pretty excited. recently i got this program for the Mac which allows me to rip movie trailers off of my DVDs and save them to my computer...which i add to another DVD library program i have called DVDpedia. it's fun to play with.

oh, and i also added a link in my Diaryland profile to my Yahoo LaunchCast station in case anyone's interested in listening to the sort of music that i do. you can get to that by going to the "Info" button on the left and then to "Diaryland Profile."

stay tuned this weekend for a lengthy review involving a book, a documentary, and a film that's coming out next year. can you guess what it is...?
