Downfall (2004)

a.k.a. Der Untergang. this was one that i saught out because it has recently broken into the IMDb's Top 250 list, which i try to stay caught up on. well, generally i try to make sure i have seen everything on the top 100 of the list. today this one is at #51.

this is about the downfall of Hitler, once he starts to seriously lose the war in Europe. it covers the last week or so of his life in his German bunker.

one thing that this film really opened my eyes to historically is that Hitler was literally surrounded by people inside this huge bunker. i always used to picture him sitting by himself and maybe Eva Braun with him. and he's in some little cubby-hole underground somewhere. this was actually a top-notch, well constructed bunker with probably a hundred small rooms and then some huge ballrooms, banquet halls, etc. at least that's the way it was shown in the movie.

that's really all i got out of the movie. i mean there were some very good performances in the movie i suppose, but mostly it was just a downer of a story without much redemption in the end. yeah, i guess it was very realistic probably and was an accurate portrayal of this situation in history, but does this make for a grand film? not really. i think it needed some other redeeming qualities.
