Sin City (2005)

i was always somewhat excited about seeing this movie and i know a lot of my friends were. they kept saying "have you seen it? have you seen it?" so i finally got caught up. this one's number 91 today on the IMDb Top 250, so you always know when i see that a new film has broken that Top 100 mark, i'm going to see it at some point.

the movie follows the stories of 3 different men in Sin City. they are all vigilantes in one way or another and they are all trying to help women in one way or another. it's sort of insane, murderous chivalry i guess you might say. the first one is a police officer (Bruce Willis) who is trying to save a little girl from a murderous pedophile. the second is a monstrous looking man who seems to have superpowers and is obsessed with finding and killing whoever caused the death of the woman he loved. the third is a semi-insane man (Clive Owen) who gets involved with a group of prostitutes and has to help them protect their turf by destroying a rival gang group.

Stephen kept telling me how graphically violent, yet very good this movie was. he was right. it's graphic in most ways you can think of. i mean, i guess that's to be expected though. its point was to be as faithful as possible to a very famous "graphic" novel. as the name indicates, those novels are very graphic in nature.

i thought all of the CGI in this movie was great and very believeable as looking like a comic book. something that was kind of odd was the use of white blood. since most of the movie is black & white, you can't use red blood. and in comic books blood is usally white to make it stand out. i guess that was the idea here. although, sometimes blood was actually red. i guess it depended on the placement of the blood. anyway, this movie has a wonderful look to it and i think it was extremely innovative.

i was interested in seeing Elijah Wood's character in this film. he definitely turned out to be a fascinating villain, although i hated to see him get destroyed so quickly. the IMDb already lists Sin City 2 and 3 as being in production, so it's sort of sad to think that so few of the cool characters from this story will be alive to return for the next installments. hopefully Frank Miller, the novelist, has some equally cool characters though in his later works.
