I Heart Huckabees (2004)

i think that by watching the trailer for this movie, I was excited about seeing it, but actually the trailer essentially is the movie. it's crazy and very excited, but doesn't really get you anything. it hardly makes you laugh because you're constantly wondering "what are they talking about?" "what's going on?"

the basic plot of the movie is that Albert (Jason Schwartzman) who is a tree-hugger becomes obsessed with his repeated chance meetings with a large African guy and he ends up hiring two "existential detectives" to follow him around and figure out what's going on. in the process he gains a partner, Tommy Corn (Mark Wahlberg), who is also having an existential crisis. they get involved in a lot of very strange conflicts.

i definitely gave this movie a chance. a long time ago when it first came out, i was expecting to like it. i guess i was pulled in by the energy, the anticipated comedy of the movie, and the wonderful art direction. all of that counts for a bunch of crap though when your plot is useless. there's some bad casting in this movie and really the plot is mostly non-existent. it counts on the fact that you will be laughing the entire time, but it never really gives you a sincere reason to laugh.

in all honesty i had to turn the movie off before we were finished watching it. Jill thought that the movie probably comes to a conclusion at the end and everything that has come before in a way will all make sense to the viewer. i concluded that since i didn't really care about anything that had happened before the ending, the ending wouldn't make me happy. i only care about the ending to a movie if the beginning was totally worthwhile. it's like watching the ending of a pro wrestling match. do i really care about how it finishes up? i mean the body of the event was nearly useless to me.
