War of the Worlds (2005)

i still need to write my review of another Steven Spielberg movie that we watched last week, but anyway here's this one. my family came to visit this past weekend and we kept on talking about War of the Worlds being out. when we ran out of ideas of things to do, we decided to go see it. i think i had always been somewhat interested in the movie.

it's an adaptation of the classic H.G. Wells/Orson Welles story. since nearly all of Steven Spielberg's movies involve a father, this movie also centers on a father figure. Tom Cruise is really a pretty lousy dad. his kids come to stay with him for a weekend and you can tell they really don't respect their dad at all. when the space invaders start coming up out of the ground though, the family ties definitely start to strengthen. people start fighting for their lives against the aliens who seem pretty much unstoppable. be sure to watch out for this movie's bookends though. the first one tells you how the movie's going to end if you think about it. it's sort of a riddle, you might say.

i think i really enjoyed the movie quite a bit. it was a great onscreen relationship between the father and his kids (eventually). the special effects were of course awesome, and the story is a classic one that you never get tired of hearing. the struggle for survival; i mean it doesn't get much better than that.

the only part i really didn't enjoy was the part with Tim Robbins. he seemed out of place to me in this movie. i never would have thought that i'd see Tim Robbins and Tom Cruise together in a movie. he did a good job i guess, but it just didn't work for me somehow.

i'd say if you think you might enjoy the movie, you probably will, so go and see it.
