Waking Ned Divine (1998)

this is one that Jill had seen before but thought was so cute and funny that i needed to see it as well. i'm sure i would have gotten around to it eventually, but she speeded up the process. i seem to remember a coworker mentioning this being good too when i worked back at the Knox County library in TN.

it's about a small community that lives in the hills of Ireland. when a couple of the male residents discover that there is a local winner of the nearly 7 million pound lotto, they start trying to discover who the winner is. when they find that it is Ned Divine, who in fact died from the shock of it, they decide to pose as Ned and share the winnings with others...but it isn't quite that simple. not everyone is willing to pretend.

i enjoyed the movie. i guess it's sort of a light comedy and it's an interesting sort of community to do it in. more interesting than if it had happened in, say, rural North Dakota. the acting was also quite good and comedic. the guy who plays the lead role of Jackie O'Shea reminds me of this famous Irish actor from the 40s and 50s. take a look at the photos from the IMDb... the guy in this movie is: Ian Bannen. the other guy i'm thinking of is: Donald Crisp (look at the final picture). so maybe in reality they don't look exactly the same, but they do in my mind anyway.

it was a fun movie and i think most people would probably enjoy it. nothing extraordinary, but pretty good.
