Hook (1991)

this is interesting. i just read the Steven Spielberg admitted to being disappointed with the final result of this movie. i wonder why. i know most people really enjoyed it. maybe not adults, but i was 11 years old when this was released. i loved it and i still do. Jill and i watched it in pieces, over a 3-day period, when we were bored.

the movie is about Peter Pan, now that he's grown up. he is a successful businessman in his 40s with a wife and kids living in the U.S. the problem is that he has nearly lost his sense of humor and he no longer appreciates his family. when he stops by England to visit Granny Wendy, Captain Hook abducts his children and takes them to Neverland. Peter must return to Neverland and remember that he IS Peter Pan and not just a regular businessman.

i thought this movie was splendidly done. it sticks true to the original Peter Pan story, but adds a lot of new fun plot devices that hadn't been thought of previously. the cast is also wonderful. Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, Julia Roberts, and Bob Hoskins are all excellent. you wouldn't hardly know that Dustin Hoffman was the same person, he looks so great in his curly black wig, captain's uniform, and pirate mustache. Robin Williams also does a great job with this complicated character that changes his attitude/outlook multiple times throughout the film.

it's a great kids movie and i can't wait for my kids to watch it. actually, i think this is probably more fun than any other version of the Peter Pan story i've ever seen. it has a certain something that the others don't, and i think it has something to do with the lead actors and the depth of character that they bring to the screen. i'm sure Spielberg also played a large role in helping them bring those traits out. too bad he didn't enjoy his creation as much as others did.
