The Village (2004)

this is a movie that Jill and i went to see when it originally came out many months ago. i'm not sure why i didn't get a chance to write about it. it's a truly wonderful film though. Jill's parents are visiting just now, so we thought this would be a good movie for the two of them to see while they stayed with us. we'll be forcing a Star Wars marathon in the next few days of course, but for now let's talk about this one.

The Village is the newest film from director M. Night Shyamalan. it's about a group of townspeople who seem to be living at some point during the late 1800s. they keep themselves separated from "the towns" because they are surrounded by a forest. the forest contains monsters that they refer to as "those we don't speak of." after a member of the town becomes dangerously wounded, a brave young blind girl decides that she will risk her life traveling through the woods in order to bring back medicine to save him. she learns a lot about herself as well as the seedy history behind the village.

i don't think i'll ever get tired of watching this movie. it's really spectacular. Shyamalan is a genius, pure and simple. i think a lot of my friends have or had mixed feelings about this movie. Jill and i love it. the music is wonderful, the cinematography is done by Roger Deakins who is definitely my favorite cinematographer. the casting was just perfect and all of the actors and actresses do a wonderful job.

favorite scene from this movie: Ivy holds out her hand crying, waiting for Luscious to come for her... one of "those we do not speak of" is just about to take her hand instead. just in the nick of time, enters Luscious's hand which takes her and in slow motion speeds her from danger.
