The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005)

wow, ok. here's an entry. i'm not going to spend too much time on this one because i've just upgraded to a Gold Diaryland membership. i need to start changing things around a good bit. i'll probably be redesigning over the next few days.

Jill really wanted to see this one. i had heard the movie was mediocre and i was expecting it to be just that. i had heard correctly. it had its charms, but wasn't excellent.

this is based on the famous nonsensical Douglas Adams book. aliens come and destroy earth and only a two people escape by hitchhiking with aliens. the main character is actually in love with the girl who escaped, but he has trouble getting to be with her. she's involved with the stupid two-headed president of the universe and then he has to rescue her from the evil alien caretakers. it's a little screwy, but that's the story's charm.

i love Martin Freeman who played the main character, Arthur. he's always a very down to earth and loveable guy. Jill and I enjoyed him in both Love Actually (2003) and The Office. Zooey Deschanel is also a very cute and talented actress. she was good in both Elf (2003) and The Good Girl (2002). Most of the rest of the actors were wrong for their parts. apparently Jim Carrey was in the running at one point for the presidential role. too bad it went the useless Sam Rockwell.

good story, but not executed as well as it might have been.
