Million Dollar Baby (2004)

sorry about the delay in writing the review for this film. at least i finally did get to it.

this is one of the remaining Best Picture nominees that i needed to see. i'm still lacking 2 of them that i should see within the next week or two. i'm starting to agree with the media that a few weeks ago it looked like The Aviator all the way, but now it's starting to look like maybe Million Dollar Baby might have an excellent chance as well.

this movie is of course about a female boxer who begins working with a famous boxing coach who is down on his luck and is sort of looking for a great fighter to invest his time in. he has just a bit of trouble getting over the fact that she's a girl, but they quickly become thick as theives. but that's not all of the struggle involved in this movie. i don't want to spoil it for you, but the end was wonderful, i thought. apparently some people have complained about the last half of the movie, but i thought it was excellent.

Jill refused to see this one with me because she hates Clint Eastwood as well as boxing. valid opinions, but i couldn't avoid seeing it. and i'm glad that i did go since i thoroughly enjoyed this film. granted i'm not a huge boxing or Clint Eastwood fan either, but he has made a couple of great films in the past few years. i guess some people actually do get better with age.

also, i'm totally rooting for Hilary Swank vs. Annette Bening. it has been pointed out in the media quite a bit recently that in 1999 Swank beat out Bening for the Best Actress award at the Oscars and they've both been nominated again this year. i think a few people care about Bening losing to her a second time, but most people just think...Swank has done it again. i'd definitely give this one straight away to Hilary Swank.
