L.A. Story (1991)

this is our final film for the Steve Martin marathon this week. a friend at work recommended this one and it's a film that gets mentioned quite a bit in film circles, so i thought maybe it was time that we watched it.

the movie was written by Steve Martin and is about his character, Harris, who is a weatherman searching for love and a little bit of insanity. he's trying to feel young and fun, but not always feeling it. he's with a terrible lady at the beginning of the film and gets attracted to another one that he thinks is magical from the first time he meets her. he also starts sleeping with a young girl who enjoys enemas, but ends up being obsessed with the other, more magical lady.

this is a movie that does have some magic to it, but it's also very confused, especially at the beginning. it can't decide if it's a comedy or a straight drama. i think that's Steve Martin's inability to separate comedy from drama. the direction of this film is also fairly bad which hurts it terribly. the actresses in the film are fairly badly chosen as well.

aside from these flaws, i did enjoy a number of elements of the film. it had a very good ending. also, the use of the Enya soundtrack is great, especially since Jill and i love Enya. it's a creative and sometimes pretty movie with quite a few large flaws.
