The Jerk (1979)

the Steve Martin marathon continues with The Jerk. this is possibly the single best performance by Steve Martin ever. it's the best i can think of. i had seen it before, but this was the first time for Jill.

the Jerk is the story of a poor black child...well, he thinks he was anyway. he's really an idiot who goes on various adventures that lead him to love and loss, fame and loss, and riches and loss. it's not completely positive in terms of the things that happen to him, but it's always funny.

normally i detest seeing Bernadette Peters, but she's tolerable and even funny in this context. i can't think of another good performance from her, but she works in this film.

favorite scene in this one would be a tie between the scene where Marie shows Navin her knife throwing skills and the scene where the lunatic starts trying to shoot Navin and Navin thinks that the lunatic..."He hates these cans!"
