The Aviator (2004)

we had been wanting to see this for some time in order to prepare for the Golden Globes (which is tonight on NBC!) and the upcoming Oscars. i feel fairly sure that this will get nominated for Best Picture and probably win.

this is a biographical picture about Howard Hughes. if you're not familiar with him, he was a big industrialist in the 1930s-40s who got involved in making films as well as creating airplanes. he made and lost huge amounts of money constantly and became an oddball cultural icon. he was also largely insane. he was obsessed with cleanliness and sometimes went into spells of madness. he dated quite a few famous starlets of the time as well, which added to his fame.

one of the things you have to realize before you watch this is that it is almost a 3 hour film. i always like to be prepared for that before i sit down to watch something of that length. so be forewarned.

it's a good 3 hours though and very entertaining. i didn't enjoy the parts with Eva Gardner too much because she was played by Kate Beckinsale who i don't hold in extremely high regard. so those could have been taken out, but most of the rest is pretty awesome.

Cate Blanchett is amazing...amazing as Katherine Hepburn. she apparently studied long and hard to get her accent and even mannerisms perfect. and she was just that, perfect. i sincerely hope that she gets the best supporting actress awards. and i can't believe i'm saying this...i'm also hoping for Leo DiCaprio to win the best actor awards. i just realized something though; Cate Blanchett is up against Natalie Portman for her performance in Closer. well, that's a hard call. at least Natalie's going to get beaten by an actress that i like and that did a sincerely great job.
