The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)

Jill and i had been interested in seeing this one for a while. i personally would have rather gone to see some of the prospective Oscar nominees, but we decided we needed to see this one. it's the new Wes Anderson movie, so it's got to be at least partially good right? i didn't end up liking it as much as his last two movies, but i knew from the previews that i wasn't going to.

it's about Bill Murray's character, Steve Zissou, an oceanographic filmmaker who seems to be having a tough time in his filmmaking as well as his personal life. when his could-be son shows up and wants a relationship, Zissou finds that he may actually enjoy being a father after all.

Owen Wilson played the son in this film and his "Air Kentucky" accent was really horrific. i don't think there's anyone that i've ever heard that can successfully fake a country accent. this was probably one of the worst attempts Jill and i had ever witnessed.

i also didn't enjoy the cutesy little fake, cgi creatures that are strewn about the movie. they're not funny, nor cute really, and i just felt they were in the way of an otherwise interesting story.

overall the movie was quite good though and Jill thoroughly enjoyed it. the father-son relationship was interesting to watch as it unfolded and the acting was wonderful. i could have done without the Angelica Huston character though. i thought it felt like she was put in the film just because Anderson wanted her in there.
