The Man Without A Past (2002)

this was one that my friend Anna had recommended a long time ago. (don't forget to click on the "suggest a movie" link every once in a while everyone. i'll watch it. i promise. but please don't make me watch something terrible just to spite me. Jill has to watch it too. be nice to Jill.) she seemed to think that this director, Aki Kaurismaki, was quite overrated. she mentioned him being considered one of Europe's (Finland's to be precise) best filmmakers.

this movie is very quiet and slow moving and really not very interesting. it's about a man (who i think looks quite a bit like Roy Orbison) who gets beaten up by some punks and can't remember who he is. he goes to a soup kitchen and meets a lady from the Salvation Army. he gets interested in her and begins renting a shack from this overbearing guy. and that's about all i have to say about the plot.

i sometimes found myself laughing at how boring and unimportant and stupid some of the events of this movie were. other than that we just sort of stared at it and wondered why we were watching it. at this point in the review i'd just like to read a couple of the phrases that are placed on the outside cover of this movie's packaging, should any of you choose to purchase this film. "A new deadpan comedy by Aki Kaurismaki." "The funniest film Kaurismaki has ever made!" and "A delicious blend of hilarity and heartbreak."

i think i agree with Anne on this one. let's have some more of this actually. feel free to point out some overrated films so that i can tear them apart. "suggest a movie."
