Pollyanna (1960)

i seem to remember thinking about renting this movie sometime within the last year or so. i remember coming across someone being called a "Pollyanna" in a book i was reading at the time. i liked the idea of this character and i think i meant to rent it but i never did. last night i asked Jill to cough up a movie that was bad that she couldn't help liking. this was the one she gave me. to see my example for her...click here.

Pollyanna stars Hayley Mills, in her first film, as a young orphan who is brought to a small town to live with her aunt. the aunt turns out to be very overbearing and basically keeps anyone from having any fun because of her influence over the town. Pollyanna, an optimist without bounds, helps the various people of the town to see the good in life and to realize that not everything has to be looked upon negatively. she even eventually gets to her aunt and melts her cold heart. and yes, this is a Disney film.

sometimes i think we all get in the mood to see something cute and sappy and fun. that's the time to start watching Pollyanna. of course i think there are people out there that cannot ever handle a movie like this. they don't have any childish feelings and they aren't interested in seeing them displayed on the screen. i really enjoyed seeing the primary user comment listed on the IMDb for this movie, "Nauseating; I'm going to feed the tape to my dog."

anyway, i enjoyed the movie and i thought Hayley Mills did a wonderful job. she even apparently received a special Academy Award for her performance in this film. that's always nice when that happens. it's too bad they don't do that anymore at the Oscars. it seems like it used to happen a lot for unusual performances such as this one.
