Spiderman 2 (2004)

this is one of those series that i'm interested in and enjoy watching, but i don't get obsessed with it beforehand. i always felt like it was kind of light as far as superheroes and all that go, so i've always taken it rather lightly. Colin, Deanna, Keith, and i all got together last night to see it on the day of its premier. i wish i could have slept longer last night (didn't get to bed 'til 12:30), but it was definitely worth seeing at the theater. we of course were sitting in a packed house. oddly enough, almost everyone there was around our age. i guess we're the only age group who would go to see it that late at night on its opening night.

in this movie, Peter Parker begins to realize that his constant pursuits of criminals and helping to save those who are in trouble are pretty much destroying his personal life. he's ruining his college courses because he doesn't have time for the work, or to even make it to class on time. worst of all, he's constantly disappointing his friends by not showing up to their functions and not even calling them. when he begins to lose MJ to another man, he decides to put away the Spiderman outfit and focus on his own life. the bad thing is that Dr. Octopus is out there trying to create a huge fusion reaction that will likely blow up half of the city. Peter has to choose between the life he wants to lead and the life he was meant to lead.

i mentioned this to Keith a few weeks ago when we re-watched the first Spiderman movie. James Franco, who plays Peter's best friend Harry, should have been Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars movies. he looks a hell of a lot like Hayden Christensen, but has a lot better acting ability. he can also definitely convey feelings of anger and betrayal onscreen. Keith has become even more vehement in his anger over this discovery than i have. he talks about it every time we see references to either Spiderman or Star Wars. oh well, one thing i guess we can't change about life is that George Lucas is an idiot about 75 percent of the time and a genius the other 25 percent. oh, and he's a pompous ass.

another acting thing that bothered me, but this time in reference to Spiderman 2 and not Star Wars, was the presence of Alfred Molina. personally i think he sucks and i thought every scene in which he was present sucked because of him. he can't convey genuine emotion and he's not at all likeable. you were supposed to like him at a couple of parts in this film and it just didn't work. he sucks. damn casting directors.

this really is a pretty awesome movie. Tobey Maguire constantly amazes me by his acting abilities. he seems sincere in just about everything he does, no matter how idiotic or weird or funny or sad. everything is real. he's going to win an Oscar some day. i can feel it. maybe not as Spiderman, but some day he will.
