Working Girl (1988)

a few days ago i considered working on seeing all of the Best Picture nominees of the 1980s but decided against it after seeing the list. now i've come to the conclusion that i'm going to work on seeing some of the movies that were nominated. this one sounded promising because of my memories of the advertising for this film from when i was 8 or so years old, and then it also helped when i realized that Harrison Ford also starred in the film (not just Melanie Griffith).

Working Girl is about a young lady named Tess(Griffith) in New York City working as a secretary for a very narcissistic businesswoman played by Sigourney Weaver. Weaver's character, Katherine, breaks her leg while skiing and seems to be stealing her secretary's ideas out from under her and using them as if they were her own. Tess comes to realize that this is going on and begins to put her own ideas about a new business venture into play by pretending to be in a higher position than a secretary would hold. along the way she finds that she has a love for her partner in crime (Ford) and that she has the strength within herself to become a very self-relient person if she wishes.

it's actually a pretty decent movie and i was definitely entertained throughout. i think had the subject matter been something other than the world of business, which holds little to no interest for me, i might have been more inclined to give the film a higher rating than a 7.

this is where the entry goes tangent-crazy...

ok this is kind of weird but i have to mention this one really cool shot in the film. i'm not really sure why it happened, but just after Tess catches her boyfriend cheating on her and she goes out to her balcony to sulk about it a bit, they do this sped up shot where the camera is flying over the sea, coming towards NYC very quickly. then all of a sudden the camera vertically pulls up really quickly without tilting the frame. it's like if you were moving on a horizontal elevator going forward at 150 miles per hour looking out and then suddenly as you approach the shoreline, the elevator sort of springs upwards, but continues to move forwards. it made me thing of a plane taking off or something, but there was no runway for it to have taken off from. i assume it had to be a sped up helicopter shot. very cool stuff though.

here's one more random thing that isn't directly related to Working Girl, but it's still somewhat movie related. you know when you see people in movies try to get reconnected to a telephone call? like someone hangs up on them and they start pushing in the hang-up button on the phone itself? that actually worked for me earlier and i got reconnected to my friend David on the phone. i accidentally disconnected the telephone cord from the receiver for a second and lost him. i didn't hear a dialtone though. i did the clicking on the hang-up button routine and we actually got reconnected after a moment. i was baffled. can you believe that's real?

oh, and i'm sharing this with everyone tonight. if you've been to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (and made it in time to see the previews...Bess), you've probably already seen this trailer. if not, check it out because i'm enfatuated with it. there's a new movie coming out in the summer called Garden State that is the new big project that Natalie Portman and Zack Braff have been working on over the past year or so. i'm so glad it finally found a distributor so that i will someday be able to see it. it's a rather large download, but i hope you're going to love it as much as i do. the trailer for Garden State
