Dummy (2002)

periodically i like to check up and see what Milla Jovovich is up to. she's usually not in any big name films, but she definitely usually picks things that i enjoy. i still need to see No Good Deed (2002) at some point and i'm really excited about the new Resident Evil movie coming out. even thought they've already started some of the advertising for it, it won't be out until September. they're in post-production, so hopefully some of the cgi effects will be a bit better this time around.

anyway, on with talking about Dummy. (Milla is actually in the movie, which is why i was talking about her.) this is about a very awkward young man in his late 20's named Steven (Adrien Brody) who decides that he needs a change in his life. he goes out and buys a ventriloquism doll and gets himself fired from his job. he then goes to the unemployment office and meets a very sweet and pretty lady who is his counselor. he continues to work on his ventriloquist act and his friend Fannie (Milla) convinces him that he needs to ask the lady out. he seems to go about it in just about all the wrong ways, but eventually starts to catch her eye.

i thought it was great that Adrien Brody was in this. i haven't seen him in enough films yet. he's an excellent actor. he also did his own ventriloquism live in every scene which was excellent.

i wish Milla had been in this some more and i wish her character had been a little more loveable and a little less of a trash talker, but that's definitely part of her personality, so i guess she likes to express that in roles from time to time. some of it was really cool though. there's this one scene at the beginning where she's doing this cool wave move with her arms. hmmm...try to describe this... ok, it's like she'll jerk her right hand and it makes the wave travel up her arm, through her torso, and then the left arm follows the wave, and finishes at her left hand. sort of a 80's dance move sort of thing. it was very funny what she was doing with it though and how it worked into the conversation. i also really enjoyed her performance with the klezmer band at the wedding at the end of the movie. she is such a good singer and she had on this really cool green and black dress. i definitely got out of it what i wanted. just to see her being herself in a way i guess. wow, does this sound lame? oh well. whatever.

yeah, but Adrien Brody was really good and i really liked the love story that happens between him and the girl Lorena. the girl that played her, Vera Farmiga, did an excellent job and i'm almost positive this is the first thing i've seen her in. hopefully it won't be the last.
