Star Wars (1977)

a.k.a. Episode IV: A New Hope. ok, of course we've all seen this and there's no way i can't give it a 10/10 rating. this is one of those movies where if you haven't ever seen it and it comes up in conversation people will yell at you like a blasphemer "YOU'VE NEVER SEEN STAR WARS?" it's a cultural staple. i was looking at my bookcase yesterday trying to pick something out to watch and i couldn't get my mind off of A New Hope.

so i'll go ahead and rehash the plot since that's the usual routine. the movie is a sci-fi fantasy film that focuses on a rebel alliance of fighter pilots that are attempting to destroy an evil empire's new battle station. at the beginning of the film two droids holding the plans for the station are able to escape from the empirial troops to a remote planet. on that planet a young man, Luke Skywalker, purchases them and then takes them to see the person they are looking for, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Kenobi realizes that they must get the droids to the rebels and the four journey to the planet they need to get to. unfortunately the planet has been destroyed by the battle station and they are taken aboard the station. they are able to escape with the princess and the plans and then they must work to defeat the empire by destroying the station itself.

i don't think i've ever so critically examined the plot of Star Wars before. it's one of those movies i've seen so many times since i was a child, i don't even look at it with a critical eye any more. so this is something new for me.

for 1977 the special effects in this film are simply amazing. amazing. and the plot and writing are just as good. great actors, great cinematography. everything about it is good. it was even nominated for Best Picture. it's really no wonder that people love this movie and the sequels as much as they do. it's a phenomenon.

i'm interested to see when they come out with this trilogy on dvd soon. i wonder how much it will cost. i hope it's not more than $50.
