*black comedy

so david and i started discussing what the definition of a "black comedy" is last night in reference to The Ladykillers. he asked me for some other examples and i couldn't really come up with any. well after doing a bit of research it seems that the basic definition of a black comedy is a film that contains a situation that would normally be a very bleak or negative topic like rape, murder, war, etc. and puts it in a positive or comedic light. the best examples i've got are: MASH (1970), Dr. Strangelove (1964), The Burbs (1989), Pulp Fiction (1994), and Life Is Beautiful (1997).

i still think this is a very misunderstood phrase and it is often used incorrectly, so we'll probably always be confused about it.

in news regarding the diary, i've been working on a lot of maintenance stuff. all of the entries should be fixed and looking all pretty again at this point, and the "suggest a movie" link is up and running again. a few people had trouble with it previously. i think in the next day or two i'll also be adding a list of all of my "9 or 10" rated films to the "top films" link that you should see over to the left. so that'll be fun.
