The Passion of the Christ (2004)

well, it was getting so much press we just had to go see it. Colin and Deanna and i decided to go see it at the mall yesterday afternoon. none of us are extraordinarily religious, but i think we all knew the majority of the story beforehand. i went to a Methodist church for most of my childhood, and actually read the Gospels back in 1999.

this movie supposedly tells the story of the last 12 hours of Jesus' life on earth. it's from the time he is captured until he dies on the cross. basically i thought that the whole 12 hour thing was wrong. i always remember thinking that it took him a day or two to die on the cross. also, i was quite bothered by some of the simply made-up stuff that happens in this movie. i don't remember anything about an earthquake or a violent storm happening as soon as Jesus died. and then his punishment before being crucified was nowhere near what was shown in this film.

basically i thought this was the usual Christ story just gored up and made extremely violent. i found it rather disgusting. and then there's this whole monster thing that happens randomly every once in a while. like you'll see the devil walking around looking all evil, or some monster growling at someone, or the devil standing there with his monster baby. wtf? there's definitely some craziness going on in this film.

yeah, so i thought it was a bit too much, and a lot of it was just weird and wrong. it does have a good style though, it was a great script, and the special effects were good. i also sort of liked the fact that it was not spoken in English. the whole film is subtitled and the only languages spoken are Hebrew, Aramaic, and Latin. so i'll say that there's more good than bad contained in this film, but it's just barely so.
