Big Fish (2003)

this is one of the potential Oscar candidates that i've actually been excited about getting the chance to go see at the theater. i was finally able to get Colin to go see it with me this past weekend. we both cried during this movie. i can't really think of another time that's happened. i shed quite a few tears. the relationships in this are very beautiful.

it's about a young man who goes to visit his father who is dying of cancer. they haven't spoken to each other for 3 years because the son feels like his father tells the same stories over and over and over and they're all filled with lies. and he feels like his father is an attention hog who never focuses on anything but himself and his own "amazing" past. while visiting his ill father, he decides to take a second look at him and tries to figure out what the actual "truth" behind the stories is.

we end up with a movie filled with tall tales (portrayed in an amazingly visual way by Tim Burton) and with some very rich familial relationships that are both loving and dynamic.

i think i like pretty much everyone who's in the cast of this film. maybe not so much Danny DeVito, but everyone else is and was awesome. the visual effects are great and i really love the guy that they got to play the giant. excellent ending to the film.

i don't think i'll go see any more movies until the Oscar nominees get announced on the 27th. there's not really anything i want to see that's out, and i don't want to see anything else unless i know undoubtedly that it's nominated.
