Love Story (1970)

mmmmm...17 days with no new updates. that's what a broken computer and then moving to a new apartment will do to you i guess. in any case, i'm set to get back into it now. well, until i convince myself to buy a ps2 and start playing dance dance revolution.

i had heard and thought of this film quite a bit over the past year especially after the Passions list came out. i knew basically nothing about it. except that it had lots of love obviously. when Leslie saw it at Hollywood Video, it was ours. i didn't realize it was so sad. after it was over Leslie jokingly told Keith over the phone something like "yeah, I can't stop crying and Mark's in the bathroom and he won't come out."

it's about two college kids who fall instantly in love with each other. Ali MacGraw plays Jenny, a smartmouth music wiz, and Ryan O'Neal plays Oliver, a hockey player rich kid who wants more than anything to get into law school without his powerful and controlling father's help. the differences between them make them love each other more than anything else in the world to the point that they are willing to sacrifice all other comforts just to be together. first you fall in love with the characters and then the movie slowly tries to break your heart. it did a damn good job on me. i was teary eyed for the last half hour of the film.

this film was nominated for 7 Oscars including Best Picture. unfortunately Patton (1970) won everything. yet another winner that i have issues with. especially when it beat out Love Story.

i think this is one of those movies that people generally don't like, but i'm going to always love. the trivia on the IMDb says "Incoming freshman at Harvard University, where the movie takes place, are traditionally shown a screening of the film at which they indulge in ritualized mass heckling." plus the film only has a 6/10 on the site. really that's no good. oh well. i'll just have to resolve myself to believe that this is one of those treasured films that most people don't recognize the value in. so they suck and i don't. too bad for them that they don't see the beauty of this amazing film.
