a.k.a. The Eye. it was just released here. and it only took a year. don't you just love that? American distribution companies are so quick on the draw. anyway my friend Colin was dying to see this one for some reason. he had heard that this was supposed to be basically the scariest movie of the year. after it was over we had a different impression.

the plot of The Eye is just insanely similar to that of M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense (1999). but let me start from the beginning. a young blind Chinese lady decides that she finally wants to be able to see the world and all of its beauty. unfortunately she gets the cornea transplants from someone with a secret past. she starts seeing things that no one else sees, like dead people walking around asking her for help and sometimes threatening her. she also sees dark spirits that come to take people who have just died a-la Ghost (1990).

i hate to sound pompous, but this movie is just derivative. yeah, it had a couple of moments where i was somewhat on edge, but overall i was just waiting too much. too much story that just wasn't that great. it's also filled with an unjustified romance that is warped by the exceptionally bad acting of the male lead. not to mention the fact that this guy looks like he's about 22 and we're supposed to believe that he's a hardened psychological therapist that people trust intrinsically. this movie requires too much suspension of disbelief. and you also have to have not been watching supernatural films for the past two decades to find any originality on the screen.
