Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
*Second Review

i'm finding it difficult to oust my previous entry.

but i decided that i had to go ahead and buy the dvd from Best Buy when i saw it on sale. i really love this movie and i know that i will watch it tons of times, so it's worth it. i think anytime there's a quirky strange love story that's done by an awesome director, i'm going to really enjoy it. another example? A Life Less Ordinary (1997).

the dvd insert is really cool on this one. throughout the film Barry wears this bright royal blue suit. in the dvd insert it says:

"Notes for Enjoyment: Get Barry's suit blue, blue, blue. Don't be shy. Get Barry's shirt white. Don't be afraid to let it bloom a bit. Turn up the contrast! Make sure your blacks are black and listen to loud!" other than the inherent poetry in those little suggestions i think this is visually a wonderful idea. the colors and artwork in this film are so breathtaking that it makes you enjoy it that much more to watch it in a sort of surreal color format like this. i enjoyed it and didn't find it bothersome to watch the film using the "blue, blue, blue" contrast suggestions.

the special features of this disc are almost worth buying alone. they are greatly devoted to the artwork of Jeremy Blake and the amazing music by Jon Brion that are showcased in the film. the features disc has a special function that allows you to create a random composition of all of the snippets of things featured on the disk. it randomly selects them one by one and shows them all to you. it's an innovative way to show you some innovative special features. these aren't your usual things like commentaries and featurettes. they are short audiovisual creations. but it does also throw in a few deleted scenes and trailers for you as well. in any case, the second disc is definitely worth watching in addition to this great film.
