Finding Nemo (2003)

to tell the truth i really didn't have any interest in seeing this film. i hadn't even considered it. Leslie called yesterday afternoon though and asked if i wanted to go with her and Clay, so i went ahead. i didn't realize that this was from the Pixar studios though. had i realized that, i probably would have been more interested in it previously. they always do an amazing job. well, i wasn't a huge fan of Monsters Inc. (2001), but maybe that's just because Billy Crystal was in it.

Finding Nemo is all about fish, not toys or monsters. more specifically, it's about a father and son clownfish who get separated. Nemo is the son, and he gets taken away one day while he's at school by some human divers. his paranoid father, Marlin, instantly takes off after him and ends up getting caught up in an amazingly difficult quest to find his son. he picks up a great friend along the way in a female fish that has a terrible memory and is forgetting what's going on from one minute to another.

i really enjoyed the actors in this one. Albert Brooks is a great choice for the scatterbrained coward-become-hero father Marlin and Ellen DeGeneres i thought was hilarious as Dory, the peppy forgetful companion of Marlin. i'm a big fan of typecasting when you're doing only a voice of an animated character. i just think it works the best.

i think it was a good time for me to see a cute movie again. i hadn't seen one in quite a while and it was very refreshing. Bruce Almighty (2003) had the potential to be cute, but it just tried to be too many things at once and ended up being rather mediocre.

i can't think of any complaints for Finding Nemo. maybe just that i wish it could have been longer. it's a top notch animated film. it's not emotionally deep really, and the story isn't at all complicated, but that's what you come to expect in a family film. everyone needs to be able to totally understand what's going on and never be confused. that's what makes it fun and so easy to get lost in. and in this case, it's a good thing.
