Bruce Almighty (2003)

i wasn't too sure about this one. i had decided to wait for some other people to give me their opinions on it before i went out and paid for it myself. Seneca at the media center told me that it wasn't very funny, but Ananda said that it was possibly the funniest Jim Carrey movie ever. my mom was interested in seeing it when she came down this weekend, so we decided to check it out. it was decent, but not amazing.

in this one Jim Carrey plays a tv news reporter who is also an aspiring anchor at his station. unfortunately he gets passed up in favor of a jackass reporter that works in competition with him. he then ends up having the worst day of his life. he gets fired from his job, his dog keeps peeing on his favorite chair, and tons of other things go wrong. he then starts yelling at God and doing just about everything blasphemous he can think of. God then gives him his powers for a while and he starts attempting to change the world for the better, with particular focus on his own life and what he wants out of it.

well, Jennifer Aniston plays Jim's girlfriend in the film, and i'm generally not a huge fan of hers. she's probably the main reason i don't watch Friends very much. no, wait...i don't really like any of those people very much any more. too trendy of a show i guess. i'm usually not a fan of trendy things. and i hate Kate Hudson. i know that she has nothing to do with Friends, but i can't stop thinking how much i hate her. why did Goldie Hawn have to breed? but anyway, Jennifer Aniston isn't overly annoying in this. i could tolerate her for the most part. and for some reason she has a scratchy voice at the beginning of the film. i think that helped. it made me think that at least she was trying to do something different than she usually does.

it's weird though. i feel like in the last few Jim Carrey movies he's not so over the top. he's trying to combine his over the top sort of humor with some drama. and it feels wrong to me. if he wants to do straight drama, that's fine. straight comedy would be fine as well. this in-between stuff just doesn't cut it with me though. i'm sure he's reaching a broader audience and all, but a great picture this does not make. it's just...ok.
