Fight Club (1999)

i think this was my third time seeing Fight Club. i think it takes a lot out of me to watch it. i mean it's damn awesome, but i still can't do it all the time. i have to be in the right mood to watch it or else it's just blasphemous for me. and i don't want to watch it too often or i'll get too familiar with it. i guess that's how i feel about most of the movies that i love. some of them i feel like i have to watch every few months though. i've lost track of what i was talking about... oh yeah, so nothing was going on at the media center this afternoon so i watched this fine film.

ok, if you haven't seen this movie already, you need to stop reading right now because i'm going to SPOIL it for you. anyway, i'll go ahead and do a short summary since that's my tradition even though you have already seen the film. it's the one about the guy (referred to as the narrator) who meets another guy named Tyler Durden who has this philosophy about shedding inhibitions and worldly possessions and it all culminates in them creating a club where men come to fight each other. later on you come to realize that Tyler Durden was actually really a second personality of the narrator himself.

i enjoyed watching it quite a bit this time because i had forgotten the awesome soundtrack, and i also noticed tons more of the clues that lead you to the conclusion that Tyler and the narrator are the same person.

this movie is really a cinematic wake up call. well, it's really a wake up call in just about every way depending on how you look at it. it has edgy and unusal cinematography at times, it has wonderfully creative editing, and makes great use of cgi effects (sometimes blending seamlessly into storyspace action). the movie breaks a lot of rules, but also sticks with some of the basic fundamentals of classical Hollywood style. i guess edgy is what it could best be described as. it's not complete alternative filmmaking, but it takes risks and pulls them all off flawlessly.
