True Romance (1993)

this is another of my Christmas dvds that i took forever to sit down and actually watch. i don't think i've watched half of what i got yet. that's pretty pathetic. i sometimes wonder if it's even worth the money to buy movies. i guess if you watch it like 5 times through the course of your life, you've saved the money in rental fees. plus i'm helping to fuel the film industry, which is nice in a way. and i just enjoy having a collection. i guess that's really an excellent collection for me to have. some people collect porcelain pigs for heaven's sake. what better collection could there be for me than great movies?

so True Romance. i watched it for the first time a little over a year ago. and i absolutely loved it. i knew very little about it the first time. if you haven't seen it, it's sort of a white trash geeky fairy tale romance with lots of Tarantinoesque violence and humor thrown in. yeah it's a goofy mixture but i fell in love with it because of the glorious two lead characters. Alabama and Clarance are so awesome together. and then the breathtaking score from Hans Zimmer. the xylophone instrument that he uses in the theme is so perfect for this. it really makes the movie in a way.

at the beginning of the film we meet Clarence who is obsessed with Elvis and kung fu movies. he can't find a decent girl whose interests are similar to his. then Alabama walks into the movie theater triple feature of Street Fighter (1974) and spills popcorn all over him. they get married the next day and they're inseparable from then on. Clarance ends up killing Alabama's former pimp and accidentally steals a suitcase full of cocaine from his house. they decide to pack up and leave town and they try to sell it once they head out west. yeah, it's nuts and all over the place but to me, it's perfect. you have to take some chances if you're going to make something that's awe-inspiring.
