The Dark Crystal (1982)

this is one of my cherished movies from my childhood. Melanie and i watched this countless times. it's probably the scariest movie i watched at a young age, but still has some sort of magical draw that sucks kids in. it's a Jim Henson movie and is surely his darkest creation in just about every way possible. Colin and i had been talking about it the night before, so we watched it on Friday night.

this is a sort of adventure fantasy film that is filled with puppets and marionettes. of course they're all extremely well done because they were created by Jim Henson's group. i don't think puppetry will ever be as popular again as it was when he was alive. sad loss.

well, the film is about a "gelfling" named Jen who goes on a quest to save to world. he has to retrieve a crystal shard and then use that to heal the Dark Crystal. that is located in the castle of the skeksis (huge birdlike people that are extraordinarily scary). along the way he meets Kira, the only other gelfling who is still alive in the world, and they find happiness in being with another of their own kind. classic fantasy type stuff, but i don't think i'll ever get tired of seeing this.

i have a friend Beth who is deathly afraid of puppets that look anything like humans. if they're some sort of animal or monster or whatever, that's ok. it's just when they start to look like humans that she gets freaked out. the gelflings look sort of like humans. imagine if you took Michael Jackson (1980s face) and combined him with an American deer. that's sort of what the gelflings look like. very strange, but very pretty at the same time.

anyway, i love this movie and i'm glad i own the dvd now because i don't think i'll ever stop watching it.
