Elmer Gantry (1960)

another Best Picture nominee this evening. this one caught my eye with the tagline "You're all sinners... You'll all burn in hell!" i really had no idea what this book/movie was about before watching this. but i had heard the name of it a lot.

and i can't believe that Shirley Jones won an Oscar for this film. and she was playing a prostitute! does anyone remember The Partridge Family?

but this is a movie version of Sinclair Lewis' novel of the same name. it's about a salesman who always felt like he deserved to be a preacher and then he finally becomes one when a traveling religious revival comes through town talking about some "old time religion." he also falls in love with the head female preacher, Sister Sharon Falconer. and then the movie drags on for two and a half hours.

i didn't find this very entertaining. it was another one of those movies where i couldn't find any really positive or interesting characters to identify with. a bunch of jerks and idiots. i can't think of what else i've seen Burt Lancaster in, but i don't remember him being anything like this. his performance was amazing and he won an Oscar for it. but wow, i really hated him sometimes in this movie. and i was supposed to.

he sure has got some wild hair. ok, i've seen him in Field of Dreams (1989) and apparently that's the only thing. i find that hard to believe. it seems like there was something else, but i can't find it. so i guess not. oh well.

UPDATE: ok, From Here to Eternity (1953) was the other thing. wow, that's two of his movies that i didn't like too well. Field of Dreams is pretty awesome though.
