Igby Goes Down (2002)

and so after we turned off 8 Women (2002) we moved on to this one. another independent film that promised to be very funny and cool. our hopes were high, but no.

this film got talked about quite a bit i guess because of the cast primarily. this is Kieran Culkin's first big role and he got nominated for a Golden Globe, as did Susan Sarandon who is just godawful in this film. the film also has Jeff Goldblum, Amanda Peet, Claire Danes, Bill Pullman, Rory Culkin, and Ryan Phillippe.

it's about a family consisting of a dad in a deep deep depression and a mom who is just nuts. they end up really screwing up their kids and Igby is the result. he lies all the time, does drugs, and has no respect for most other people. he's a jerk for the most part. not much plot other than that.

like Leslie said, the characters in this are all pretty terrible. no one is that likable. but they're not well written either and neither are their relationships with each other. very little makes linear sense in this movie. people are constantly saying things to each other that have little to nothing to do with what statements came prior to that and you begin to wonder why the scenes are even changing. i mean, if the dialogue doesn't mean anything and we're not really progressing with the characters or their relationships, why even move on to a different locality. actually, why watch the movie. so a lot of people really like this movie? i guess nonsense that isn't even funny is meant to be the epitome of cool. that's what this movie wants you to buy into anyway.

now the soundtrack, i will give it that. this movie has an awesome awesome soundtrack with lots of great bands that don't get as much airplay as they should. i probably would go out and actually purchase the soundtrack, but i'm too afraid that after listening to those awesome sounds over and over, i might start to actually convince myself that this movie was cool and well made after all. and it was not.
